SNAP increases – and changes to who qualifies – take effect Oct. 1

SUMMARY: Effective October 1, 2024, the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) will see slight increases in maximum benefits amid ongoing inflation. New allotments will be $292 for one-person households and up to $1,756 for families of eight, with an additional $220 for each extra member. Unlike previous adjustments, this increase is relatively modest due to a lower inflation rate. Additionally, new work requirements will impact able-bodied adults without dependents aged 53 and 54; they must prove employment or training to qualify, similar to younger adults. Exemptions apply to certain groups, including veterans and the homeless.
