Sims Scott Community hosts cancer walk to raise awareness
SUMMARY: On October 1, the Sims Scott Community Center in Columbus, Mississippi, hosted a walk to promote breast cancer awareness for Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Over 360,000 individuals are expected to be diagnosed with breast cancer this year, but early detection significantly enhances survival rates, with a 99% chance when caught early. Pat Scott, the president of Sims Scott Seniors, shared a personal story about her sister’s late-stage diagnosis, emphasizing the importance of regular screenings. Research indicates that Black women face a higher mortality rate from breast cancer compared to white women, highlighting ongoing disparities in healthcare.

Mississippi justices reject latest appeal from man on death row since 1976
SUMMARY: The Mississippi Supreme Court has unanimously denied the latest appeal from Richard Gerald Jordan, the longest-serving death row inmate in the state, who was sentenced in 1976 for kidnapping and murdering Edwina Marter. Jordan’s attorney argues the court erred by not applying a 2017 U.S. Supreme Court ruling on mental health assessments in death penalty cases. This latest appeal, filed in December 2022, claimed that Jordan lacked due process because of a shared psychiatric examiner. The court upheld earlier rulings that such arrangements did not violate his rights. Jordan is also involved in ongoing challenges regarding the state’s execution drug protocols.
