Senate passes defense bill that includes projects for the Coast
SUMMARY: The U.S. Senate has passed the Fiscal Year 2025 National Defense Authorization Act, which includes significant Mississippi priorities. Following House approval, the bill now awaits President Biden’s signature. Sen. Roger Wicker, a key figure in the legislation, highlighted Mississippi’s crucial role in national security through its military contributions. The bill provides a 14.5% pay increase for lower-ranking military personnel, alongside funding for various initiatives, including a new Air Traffic Control Tower at Keesler Air Force Base and advanced maritime sensor development in Gulfport. Controversially, it also prohibits the Department of Defense from funding gender-reassignment treatments for minors.
