‘Share the shore’: Audubon Society protecting least tern colonies

Published

SUMMARY: As summer begins, least tern colonies return to the coast to nest and raise their young. Destiny Pollster reports from Gulfport, where these nesting sites are protected by the Audubon Bird Program, Coastal Bird Program, and the Migratory Bird Act. Volunteers maintain these areas and monitor disturbances, as least terns can become defensive if approached too closely. With around 2,300 pairs nesting across 11 protected sites, efforts have been made to boost populations, though numbers have slowly declined over the past decade. Least tern eggs blend with the sand and are difficult to spot, emphasizing the importance of protected nesting areas. The Audubon Society seeks volunteers to monitor the colonies, especially during the 4th of July celebrations. More information is available on WX news outlets.
