TVA Dam Safety workers talk about calling a 'condition red' for Nolichucky Dam
SUMMARY: The Noach Chucky Dam managed an unprecedented influx of 1.3 million gallons of water per second during catastrophic flooding caused by Hurricane Helen, but experienced only minor damage. Celebrated for its century-long stability, the dam prevented an estimated $46 million in potential flood damage and saved numerous lives. Despite the challenges, such as damage to monitoring technology and rising water levels, TVA (Tennessee Valley Authority) crews are diligently inspecting the site and plan to restore it to normal conditions, a process expected to take one to two years. Efforts are ongoing to enhance the dam’s resilience for future events.
When Hurricane Helene brought flooding to East Tennessee, officials warned about a risk the Nolichucky Dam could fail. It didn’t, and the dam was later inspected.
