Seniors are the fastest growing segment of the homeless population
SUMMARY: Seniors are the fastest-growing segment of the homeless population in South Florida and nationwide, with many facing dire situations on fixed incomes. Local organizations like Makasa provide solutions, but they need support. Aging couple Mei and Orlando, environmental activists who immigrated from Cuba in 1991, became homeless due to a $400 rent increase, forcing them to live in a van. While they loved each other, Mei’s husband died shortly after finding assistance at Makasa. With her own health challenges, Mei anxiously awaits permanent housing. The Miami-Dade Homeless Trust seeks landlords to help provide homes for elderly individuals in need.
Betty Nguyen reports Mia Casa is a local organization that offers solutions and hope.

Lakeland Police released body cam video showing altercation between teen and two officers
SUMMARY: Lakeland’s police chief stated that officers‘ use of force, including a taser, was justified during a May incident involving a 16-year-old trespassing at a pool. A resident had called 911, requesting the teens stop cursing in front of children. Upon arrival, officers found no one was a resident or valid guest. After asking the group to leave, the situation escalated when the teen refused and resisted, prompting officers to use physical force. Bodycam footage showed the teen flailing and resisting. Although charges against him were later dropped, Chief Taylor defended the officers’ actions as appropriate and within policy.
Chief Sam Taylor said the officers were justified when they tased a teen during an incident in May when Lakeland Police were called to an apartment complex on Griffin Road.
