Senators push increased legislative oversight of VA | Tennessee
SUMMARY: Legislation aimed at enhancing Congressional oversight of the financially troubled Veterans Administration has been introduced in the Senate, with Tennessee Senator Marsha Blackburn among 14 cosponsors. Authored by Senator Dan Sullivan, the Protecting Regular Order for Veterans Act responds to a $2.88 billion budget shortfall in disability and education benefits and an $11.97 billion shortfall for medical care in fiscal year 2025. Sullivan criticized the lack of accountability, especially after Veterans Affairs Secretary Denis McDonough declined to appear before a Senate committee. The proposed legislation mandates quarterly budget reports from the VA to improve financial management and accountability.
