SUMMARY: The Senate narrowly confirmed Pete Hegseth as Secretary of Defense with a 51-50 vote, secured by Vice President JD Vance’s tie-breaking vote. GOP Senators Mitch McConnell, Lisa Murkowski, and Susan Collins opposed Hegseth due to allegations of sexual assault, alcohol abuse, and financial mismanagement, which he denied. Despite these controversies, the Trump administration strongly backed him. Hegseth pledged to overhaul the Pentagon, particularly its policies and bureaucracy, and restore a “warrior culture.” Critics, including Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, called him unqualified, questioning his judgment, experience, and character for the role.
