Senate announces counter tax reform, citing more conservative approach than House bill
SUMMARY: The Mississippi Senate has proposed a counter tax bill to the House’s “Build Up Mississippi Act,” which aims to phase out the income tax and reduce the grocery tax. While both bills focus on tax cuts, the Senate, led by Lt. Gov. Delbert Hosemann, seeks a more measured approach, proposing to lower the income tax rate to 2.99% by 2030 instead of full elimination. The Senate bill also plans to cut the grocery tax from 7% to 5%, unlike the House’s higher effective rate. Additionally, the Senate’s proposal addresses tax revenue for transportation but does not tackle the funding for the Public Employees Retirement System. Both chambers will need to negotiate to reach a final agreement.

Thalia Mara Hall update: No official timeline for reopening
SUMMARY: Thalia Mara Hall in downtown Jackson has been closed for over six months due to mold, a faulty HVAC system, roof leaks, and other safety issues, including asbestos and human waste. Although Mayor Chokwe Antar Lumumba initially expressed optimism about reopening, the State Fire Marshal’s report stated the venue is not safe for reopening yet. Major repairs, like hydrostatic testing of the fire suppression system and custom fabrication of a new fire curtain, are still pending. Currently, the only scheduled event is the State Ballet Theatre of Ukraine’s performance on March 14, with no other shows announced.

Man accused of killing Jimmie ‘Jay’ Lee turns self in to police amid new charge
SUMMARY: Sheldon “Timothy” Herrington, accused of killing Ole Miss student Jimmie “Jay” Lee, has been charged with tampering with evidence following the discovery of Lee’s remains in Carroll County. Herrington, who turned himself in to Oxford police, was previously charged with capital murder. Lee, missing since July 2022, was a prominent member of Oxford’s LGBTQ+ community. Herrington’s previous trial ended in a mistrial due to a hung jury, with a lone dissenter citing the absence of Lee’s body. Now that Lee’s body has been found, a retrial and new evidence could impact the case. A bond hearing is scheduled for February 21.
