Secret Service director resigns after assassination attempt against former President Trump
SUMMARY: Kimberly Cheatle, director of the Secret Service since August 2022, is resigning following an assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump. This incident raised concerns about the agency’s effectiveness in safeguarding current and former presidents. Cheatle accepted full responsibility for the security lapse in an email to staff, citing the attempt as the Secret Service’s “most significant operational failure” in decades. Her resignation follows a harsh critique from Congress, where lawmakers questioned her about the investigation. The assailant, Thomas Matthew Crooks, managed to get dangerously close to Trump during a rally in Pennsylvania despite recent security threats.
