Mississippi legislative leaders advocate Medicaid expansion, heading to conflict with the governor
SUMMARY: Mississippi’s Republican legislative leaders, including Lt. Gov. Delbert Hosemann and House Speaker Jason White, are advocating for Medicaid expansion to cover low-wage workers who lack affordable insurance. This proposal, favored by business groups, contradicts Gov. Tate Reeves’ stance that opposes increasing Medicaid enrollment. Hosemann highlighted that expansion could assist about 75,000 individuals, while White stressed the economic benefits of accessible healthcare. Discussions took place during the Mississippi Economic Council’s Hobnob event. Legislative priorities include healthcare access, reducing the grocery tax, and continuing the phased reduction of the personal income tax, set to commence in January.
