Mississippi colleges look to adapt in new era of athlete compensation
SUMMARY: College football rosters are set to evolve due to changes in transfer rules and Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) laws. Yahoo Sports' Ross Dellenger discusses the financial implications for NCAA institutions and athletes. Over the past three seasons, fans have navigated the complexities of the transfer portal and NIL, amid significant lawsuits like House vs. NCAA. The NCAA lifted rules allowing athletes to earn via NIL, and now power conferences are negotiating revenue-sharing settlements. Power Five schools, particularly in the Big Ten and SEC, will share around 22% of their revenues with athletes, equating to $20-23 million annually. Conversely, Group of Five schools may struggle to afford similar revenue-sharing. This change is delayed, with implementation expected around August 2025.
Changes to transfer rules and NIL laws have shifted the way college football rosters will look for seasons to come.
