Santa Claus, reindeer team cleared for Christmas Eve travel across Mississippi
SUMMARY: Mississippi travel officials are preparing for a busy holiday season, with Santa Claus receiving approval from the Mississippi Department of Transportation (MDOT) for his sleigh and toy load. MDOT inspected Santa’s sleigh, confirming it met safety standards, including weight limits and lighting. Santa’s takeoffs and landings in Mississippi were approved, and exceptions were granted for last-minute additions to the “Nice List.” MDOT encouraged residents to follow Santa’s safety example by ensuring children are in car seats, seatbelts are worn, and distracted driving is avoided. Drivers were reminded to be cautious and alert for reindeer and sleighs during the holiday season.

Bird flu confirmed in flock of Greene County chickens
SUMMARY: Officials have confirmed that a chicken flock from a commercial breeder in Greene County, Mississippi, has tested positive for H5N1 avian influenza (bird flu). The Mississippi Board of Animal Health noted that the poultry poses no food safety risk when handled and cooked correctly. The affected premises are quarantined, and the flock has been depopulated to prevent disease spread, with no birds entering the food system. This is the first case of highly pathogenic avian influenza in Mississippi’s commercial poultry since spring 2023. Bird flu has been detected in migratory waterfowl, and poultry owners are urged to enhance biosecurity measures.
