Rogers mayoral candidate Greg Hines talks issues ahead of 2024 Election
SUMMARY: At 22, I was elected to the Rogers City Council, serving for 12 years while also working in law enforcement, including roles at the Miville Police Department and as Director of Public Safety for Forbidden County. Recently, a tornado caused over $33 million in damages in our community, requiring extensive rebuilding efforts, both public and private. I aim to initiate a new bond election for significant investment, following a successful previous $500 million investment. With 14 years in public service, I plan to step down in four years to facilitate leadership transition, emphasizing the importance of stable governance for community success.

Arkansas Department of Education approves performance levels for state testing
SUMMARY: Arkansas is introducing a new student performance system with four levels ranging from “limited understanding” to “advanced understanding,” aimed at enhancing educational outcomes. The new standardized test, ATLAS (Arkansas Teaching Learning Assessment System), replaces the previous ACT Aspire and was developed by local educators to better reflect Arkansas students‘ needs. Following last spring’s assessments, teachers analyzed questions to establish benchmarks for student success. The goal is to use these scores to inform teaching strategies, support parents in decision-making, and improve Arkansas’s national educational ranking by tracking performance over time. Test results will be shared with parents for transparency.
“We wanted to create an Arkansas specific product standards that were created by our Arkansas expert teachers.” Jacob Oliva Education Secretary said.

Hurricane Milton kills at least 16 as crews work to rescue survivors
SUMMARY: Hurricane Milton has caused at least 16 fatalities, with unprecedented rainfall of nearly 19 inches in St. Petersburg, Florida. This is about ten times the typical October amount. In Tampa, over 135 residents from an assisted living facility were rescued as parts of the city were submerged. Hillsborough County’s rescue efforts involved numerous responders using high-water vehicles and boats to assist families. Many, like Oscar Valdera, lost everything, with significant water damage reported. One resident, Yamet Bario, described her distress as flooding entered her home, emphasizing the immense hardship faced by those affected in the neighborhood.
At least 16 people are dead as a result of Hurricane Milton. The storm dumped an incredible amount of rain, including nearly 19 inches in St. Petersburg, Fla.

Arkansas students explore careers in welding as steel industry booms
SUMMARY: Arkansas has rapidly become a leading producer in the steel industry over the past 15 years, with growth of 39%. In an effort to engage younger generations, the industry hosted Steel Day, where high school and college students participated in hands-on welding experiences. The event highlighted the need for new entrants, as the average age of welders is over 50. Speakers, including Attorney General Tim Griffin, emphasized inclusive opportunities for all, particularly encouraging women to enter the field. Students also competed for scholarships through a virtual welding contest. As Arkansas voters consider issue one for vocational school funding, the future looks promising.
Arkansas’s steel industry has increased by 39% over the last 15 years. In response, organizations are introducing the art of welding to a new generation.
