Road recovery efforts in North Carolina after Helene
SUMMARY: The North Carolina Department of Transportation is actively working to repair roads and reconnect communities affected by flooding from Hurricane Helene. In Hendersonville, crews are repairing U.S. Highway 64, where significant damage has transformed roads into cliffs and left debris scattered. The washed-out bridge over the Rocky Broad River highlights the storm’s impact, with some engineers describing the damage as the worst they’ve seen in their careers. Despite tracking repair costs for federal reimbursement, the priority remains on swift recovery. Engineers aim to reopen the Bat Cave bridge in the next week or two to facilitate rebuilding efforts.

Who is Pete Hegseth? President-elect Donald Trump’s pick to serve as Secretary of Defense
SUMMARY: Donald Trump has nominated Army National Guard Captain and Fox News host Pete Hegseth to lead the Department of Defense, citing his toughness, intelligence, and commitment to America First. Hegseth, a staunch critic of the “woke military,” advocates for removing diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) and critical race theory (CRT) from military training. Despite his combat experience and two Bronze Stars, Hegseth lacks senior military and government experience. Critics, especially Democrats, question his qualifications and specific knowledge of defense policy, raising concerns about his potential confirmation process, even in a Republican-controlled Senate.
President-elect Donald Trump has picked a well-known television host and Army veteran to serve in his Cabinet.
Trump has selected Fox News host Pete Hegseth to serve as Secretary of Defense. Hegseth hosted “Fox & Friends Weekend.”
Hegseth is an Army combat veteran who deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan. He was decorated with two Bronze Stars, as well as a Combat Infantryman’s Badge for his service.

Multiple attorneys general call on appeals court to dismiss Trump indictment | National
SUMMARY: Multiple state attorneys general, led by Florida, have urged the 11th Circuit Court of Appeals to uphold the dismissal of an indictment against President-elect Donald Trump. The indictment, brought by Special Counsel Jack Smith, accused Trump of mishandling classified documents. The attorneys general argue that Smith’s appointment by U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland was unconstitutional, claiming it violated Article II of the U.S. Constitution. They contend that Smith’s power, granted without Congressional approval, is unconstitutional, as it lacks presidential accountability. Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton also filed a separate brief opposing Smith’s appointment.
