Ridgeland woman convicted on two counts of felony child abuse
SUMMARY: A 36-year-old Ridgeland woman, Akilah Watson, was found guilty of two counts of felonious child abuse after a two-day jury trial in Madison County, Mississippi. Child Protective Services received reports of abuse against Watson and her children, leading to a welfare check at her apartment. Two teenagers, a 16-year-old girl and a 15-year-old boy, detailed instances of severe abuse, including beatings with various objects and a pistol-whipping. The children were placed in temporary foster homes and later with their godmother. Watson faces a potential sentence of between five years to life for each charge and her sentencing is scheduled for May 13, 2024.

SUMMARY: Cristian Mitchel Mondragon Gonzales, 29, pleaded guilty to second-degree murder related to a 2018 homicide on the Natchez Trace Parkway. Following a fight at a party on September 23, 2018, Gonzales pursued the victim, convincing him to go for a ride. He then shot the victim multiple times after they exited the vehicle. The victim was found the next morning. Gonzales faces a maximum penalty of life in prison and is scheduled for sentencing on February 12, 2025. The case was investigated by the FBI, Natchez Trace Parkway police, and Ridgeland police.
