Richland woman arrested for selling drugs near school, outside restaurant’s drive-through window
SUMMARY: A Richland woman named Brandi Jo Luke has been arrested for selling drugs out of a fast-food restaurant near a local school. Luke was caught distributing narcotics through the restaurant’s drive-through window. She is facing charges of selling methamphetamine and a controlled substance within 1,500 feet of a school, as well as possession of a controlled substance with the intent to distribute. Luke could potentially be sentenced to 31 years in prison if convicted. The investigation was carried out by the Richland Police Department’s FLEX unit, with assistance from every division within the department.

North Mississippi Surgery Center recognized among best by U.S. News & World Report
SUMMARY: The North Mississippi Surgery Center (NMSC) has been recognized by U.S. News & World Report as one of the nation’s top 16% of ambulatory surgery centers, ranking among the best for ophthalmology. This achievement is supported by the Orthopaedic Institute of North Mississippi (OINMS), which contributed to the center’s success in orthopedic surgery. NMSC was commended for high procedural volume, low complication rates, and excellent patient outcomes. It is the only facility north of Jackson on the U.S. News list. OINMS was also named “Best Medical Clinic” and “Best Orthopedic Clinic” in the 2024 Daily Journal Readers’ Choice Awards.

$12.86 million investment to double capacity of northeast Mississippi port
SUMMARY: Mississippi is investing $12.86 million to upgrade the Yellow Creek State Inland Port in Iuka. The renovation will enhance multimodal commerce along the Tennessee-Tombigbee Waterway, improving Mississippi’s waterway network. Upgrades include expanding the transload dock, adding new mooring cells, and installing a 700-ton crane to increase lift capacity and reduce processing times. The project, funded by the Appalachian Regional Commission, Mississippi State Multimodal Infrastructure Fund, and Yellow Creek Port Authority, aims to enhance economic development, reduce shipping costs, and boost efficiency, creating jobs and attracting new investments to the region. The port is strategically positioned for Gulf of Mexico access.

3 Mississippians among more than 2,000 investigated by IRS for COVID relief fraud
SUMMARY: Three Mississippians are being held accountable for COVID relief fraud following an IRS investigation into 2,039 tax and money laundering cases related to the CARES Act, with attempted fraud totaling $10 billion. On January 15, Zipora and Montreal Hudson were convicted of conspiracy to commit wire fraud and money laundering after attempting to fraudulently obtain loans for endangered businesses. Lakisha Pearson was sentenced to four years for mail fraud related to false IRS Employee Retention Tax Credit claims. The IRS continues investigating fraud, with over $5.6 billion involved and 38 convictions to date.
