Republicans slap articles of impeachment on more federal judges | National

(The Center Square) – In the newest instance of Republican backlash against judges who have impeded President Donald Trump’s rapid-fire reforms, two congressmen have introduced articles of impeachment against more federal judges.

Both lawmakers accused the judges in question of being “partisan activists” attempting to illegally block the president from exercising his executive authority.

Rep. Andy Ogles, R-Tenn., filed impeachment articles Monday against U.S. District Judge Theodore Chuang from Maryland, who had ruled that Trump’s massive cuts to the U.S. Agency for International Development were “likely unconstitutional” and imposed a partial preliminary injunction.

“An [former Democratic president Barack] Obama appointee and lifelong Democrat who blocked Trump’s travel ban in 2017. This judge literally peddled critical race theory as editor of the Harvard Law Review,” Ogles said on X. “Now he’s trying to save USAID, which gives money to terrorist and radical LGBTQ+ propaganda. Impeach him!”

U.S. District Court Judge John J. McConnell Jr. from Rhode Island is also facing possible removal after Rep. Andrew Clyde, R-Ga., filed articles of impeachment against him, also on Monday. 

“This activist judge is guilty of abuse of power and conflicts of interest,” Clyde said on X. “Corrupt Judge McConnell – who stands to benefit from his own injunction – is attempting to block President Trump’s freeze and review of federal funds for waste, fraud, and abuse.”

McConnell had blocked Trump’s freeze on congressionally appropriated federal funding, accusing the president of infringing on the powers of Congress.

The newest two impeachment articles follow Rep. Brandon Gill’s, R-Texas, targeting of U.S. District Judge James Boasberg from the District of Columbia, who ordered deportation flights carrying 261 foreign prison gang members to an El Salvadoran prison to return to the U.S. Gill filed articles of impeachment at Trump’s demand.

The action prompted a rare rebuke from U.S. Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts.

“For more than two centuries, it has been established that impeachment is not an appropriate response to disagreement concerning a judicial decision,” Roberts said in a statement. “The normal appellate review process exists for that purpose.”

House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., reportedly seems uninterested in moving the impeachment articles forward. Only 15 federal judges have been impeached in U.S. history.

Tax rebate coming soon to some Georgians | Georgia

(The Center Square) – Georgia taxpayers qualifying for a tax rebate signed by Gov. Brian Kemp on Tuesday should see the money in six to eight weeks, according to the state Department of Revenue.

The $1 billion tax cut will give $500 to married filers, $250 to single filers and $375 to those who file as head of household, according to the bill passed by the General Assembly earlier this month. Taxpayers must have filed in 2023 and 2024 and had a tax liability.

Kemp also signed a bill that would reduce the state’s flat tax to 5.19%, which would return $880 million to taxpayers, he said. The state is reducing the number by 0.1% until it reaches 4.99%.

“While other states are running up budget deficits and raising taxes on their citizens, we’re investing in the priorities of our state while further cutting taxes and returning more than a billion dollars to hardworking Georgians,” Kemp said. “That’s on top of the tax relief we’ve given in prior years and is a direct result of our conservative budgeting.”

Georgia’s neighbors to the north and south, Tennessee and Florida, do not tax income, which has prompted conversations about eliminating Georgia’s income tax.

Georgia makes about $16 billion annually from income taxes, Senate Appropriations Chairman Blake Tillery, R-Vidialla, said when presenting the budget during the last days of the 2025 session.

Taxing other items could eliminate the state sales tax, he said.

Taxing services, which Texas does, could bring in $12.2 billion, which could “almost eliminate the income tax overnight,” Tillery said. Texas does not have a state income tax.

Origin Blue: 1st all-female space crew recap experience | FOX 5 News

SUMMARY: Six women made history today as the first all-female space crew, launched aboard Blue Origin’s New Shepard rocket. The crew included pop star Katy Perry, journalist Gail King, and Jeff Bezos’s fiancée Lauren Sanchez, among others. The 10-minute mission reached nearly 347,000 feet, offering weightlessness and a view of Earth and the Moon. Perry sang “What a Wonderful World” during the flight, while Oprah watched proudly on the ground. The mission, which required custom space suits for the women, was hailed as a step forward for science, beyond just a joy ride.
