Report: Unrealistic accounting poses risks to state budgets | National
SUMMARY: A study by Truth in Accounting reveals that most U.S. states ran significant deficits in fiscal 2023, with only 23 reporting surpluses. North Dakota, Alaska, Wyoming, and Utah received ‘A’ grades for financial health, while Connecticut faced the worst deficits at $44,300 per taxpayer. Many states fail to account for future obligations like pensions and retiree healthcare, leading to irresponsible budgeting. Despite improving conditions in some states, the overall financial health remains concerning, particularly in an election year when increased spending promises abound. Truth in Accounting urges more transparent accounting practices to assess true financial conditions.
