Why Apple TV+ is offering a free weekend of binge-watching
SUMMARY: Apple TV+ is offering a free two-day binge-watching opportunity this weekend to entice new subscribers to its streaming service. Experts believe this promotion effectively introduces viewers to popular shows, like “Ted Lasso” and “The Morning Show,” without requiring credit card information—only an Apple ID. Professor Michael D. Smith notes that this limited-time offer encourages viewers to explore the catalog, promoting future subscriptions. Despite having quality content, Apple TV+ has struggled with subscriber numbers compared to Netflix. The promotion aligns with Apple’s strategy to increase its viewer base as they explore potential ad-supported tiers and partnerships with platforms like Amazon.

City reports lowest homicide numbers in 2 decades
SUMMARY: In 2024, Jacksonville reported a significant decline in homicides, with 82 total—almost half the previous year’s figures and the lowest in 19 years. This marks the first time since 2011 that the city has recorded fewer than 100 homicides in a year. Jacksonville Sheriff T.K. Waters attributed this drop to enhanced strategies such as expanding the gang unit, increasing patrols, and investing in crime-solving technology. However, pockets of violence persisted, particularly in specific months. As the sheriff emphasized, even one homicide is too many, and 33 cases remain unsolved, highlighting the ongoing community impact of violence.

Asian stocks gain after Wall Street opens 2025 with modest losses
SUMMARY: Asian markets experienced gains on Friday despite a weak close on U.S. stock indexes as Wall Street’s struggles continued into 2025. Japan remained closed for the New Year holiday, while the dollar steadied against the yen. Notably, Hong Kong stocks rebounded from prior declines, and the Kospi surged 1.9%. However, the Shanghai Composite index fell, following China’s decision to impose export controls on 28 U.S. entities. In the U.S., the S&P 500 extended its losing streak, influenced by disappointing Tesla vehicle deliveries. Analysts are now adjusting expectations for Federal Reserve rate cuts amid persistent inflation concerns.
