Rep. Bennie Thompson fires staffer after controversial posts over Trump attack
SUMMARY: Democratic Congressman Bennie Thompson of Mississippi’s 2nd district terminated staffer Jacqueline Marsaw after she posted controversial statements on Facebook following an assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump at a Pennsylvania rally. Marsaw’s now-deleted post urged better marksmanship for next attempts. The Mississippi GOP had called for her firing. Although Thompson did not disavow Marsaw’s comments, he confirmed her dismissal. Thompson, known for opposing Trump, had introduced a bill to strip Trump of Secret Service protection and chaired the committee investigating Trump’s role in the January 6 Capitol insurrection. The would-be assassin, Thomas Matthew Crooks, was killed by a Secret Service sniper.

Playoff hopes diminished for No. 9 Ole Miss after 24-17 loss at Florida
SUMMARY: No. 9 Ole Miss’s national championship hopes were dashed after a 24-17 loss to Florida, a must-win game for the Rebels. Despite outgaining the Gators, Ole Miss failed to score in the red zone, resulting in two turnovers on downs and a missed field goal. Jaxson Dart had a strong start with two touchdown passes but threw two late interceptions. Ole Miss struggled on the ground without its leading rusher, while Florida capitalized with a balanced attack. The Rebels, now 8-3, must regroup for the Egg Bowl against Mississippi State. This loss likely drops them from playoff contention.
