SUMMARY: The Georgia Senate passed Senate Bill 39, prohibiting the state’s insurance plan from covering transgender surgeries, sparking a contentious debate. Sponsor Blake Tillery emphasized the bill’s intention to prevent taxpayer funds from supporting gender-affirming care. Opponent Sen. Nan Orrock argued it infringes on equal protection rights. While Tillery claimed it wouldn’t alter coverage mid-year, concerns were raised about its implications for current insurance plans. This follows previous legislation banning hormone therapy for minors and a settlement due to a lawsuit from transgender state employees. Attorney General Chris Carr supported similar legislative moves in other states, asserting that taxpayers shouldn’t fund sex-change surgeries.

SUMMARY: State Senator Brandon Beach proposed casino gambling as a means to attract more sports events to Georgia, which recently hosted the College Football Playoff National Championship and will host the Super Bowl in 2028. Beach believes state funding is necessary to continue securing such events and supports Senate Resolution 131, which would allow voters to decide on legalizing sports betting and casinos in 2026. The resolution proposes a 20% tax on betting, with the first $2 billion in revenue distributed among counties. Despite previous setbacks, proponents argue the state could generate significant tax revenue, while opponents, including the Georgia Baptist Mission Board, remain opposed.
