SUMMARY: Columbia County leaders in Martinez, GA, are proposing a resolution to increase the local homestead exemption from $2,000 to $10,000, aiming to provide property tax relief after opting out of Georgia’s statewide exemption. County Manager Scott Johnson stated that the exemption adjustment aims to benefit taxpayers, especially given the low millage rate. A draft of resolution 25-10 was presented, which could reduce taxable home values for homeowners. If approved by the county commissioners and the state legislature, it would be on the ballot for voters in November 2024, with the potential to take effect on January 1, 2026.
