Welcoming More Women into Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu | March 27, 2025 | News 19 at 4 p.m.
SUMMARY: Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) is traditionally dominated by men, with over 80% of participants being male. However, Professor Helen Aruba is on a mission to welcome more women into the sport, creating a women-only class to foster confidence, self-defense skills, and community. Aruba, a 3rd-degree black belt, emphasizes that BJJ is about skill and technique, not size or strength. The program, which includes professionals and mothers, has transformed women’s lives, boosting their self-esteem and empowering them both in and out of the gym. For many, it’s a space where they can challenge themselves and build lasting connections.

The Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu class taught by Helen Arruda stands out. It is all women, learning a sport traditionally dominated by men.
