Receiving ashes: What is Ash Wednesday and who gets the ashes?
SUMMARY: Happy Lundi Gras! With two more days of carnival fun before Lent begins, Christians are preparing for the Lenten season, starting with Ash Wednesday. This day of fasting and reflection includes the receiving of ashes in the sign of a cross on foreheads as a reminder of mortality and the need for reconciliation with God. All Catholic parishes in South Mississippi will offer services, and other Protestant denominations will also hold Ash Wednesday services. Lent will last until March 31, leading up to Easter. SUMMARY: Tessa Keating, a University of Southern Mississippi alumna, plays a key role in promoting NASA’s Artemis lunar missions at the John C. Stennis Space Center. A Carriere, Miss. native, she earned her master’s degree in communications from USM in 2006 and began her career at NASA as an intern. Today, as the protocol officer, Keating oversees events and high-level visits while educating the public on space exploration. In 2024, she received the prestigious Silver Snoopy Award for her contributions to NASA Stennis. Keating is passionate about promoting the Artemis program and its historic milestones in space exploration.
