Recalled applesauce pouches having negative impact on Mississippi families, MSDH reports
SUMMARY: Five Mississippi families have experienced elevated blood lead levels in children due to recalled applesauce pouches, including WanaBana apple cinnamon fruit puree and Schnucks and Weis brand cinnamon-flavored applesauce. The Mississippi State Department of Health (MSDH) warns that lead, a toxic chemical, is especially harmful to children. There may be no immediate symptoms, but exposure can cause headaches, abdominal pain, vomiting, anemia, and longer exposure can lead to irritability, lethargy, muscle pain, constipation, difficulty concentrating, weight loss, and tremors. MSDH advises parents to dispose of the products and have their children tested for lead poisoning if they consumed any recalled products. Families affected should contact MSDH or a health professional.
