Rear admiral visits Clinton
SUMMARY: The first Coast Guard JROTC class at Clint Junior High cited the Coast Guard pledge and were soon introduced to the first African American woman rear admiral in the US Coast Guard, Zita Merchant. Retired US Coast Guard Commander Janita Jefferson teaches military history, leadership and citizenship to over 140 enrolled cadets in the program. Merchant shared her 27-year career accomplishments, including leading operations in New York and New Jersey. She never planned for a long career in the Coast Guard but found passion and purpose in her service. Merchant aims to inspire students to find their own purpose and opportunities in the unique Coast Guard JROTC program.

Recent rain totals amounted to about 0.2 inches, helping to moisten the ground. Overnight temperatures are expected to drop to the low 60s, remaining above average. Tomorrow will bring mostly sunny skies and temperatures in the mid to low 80s, transitioning to partly cloudy on Monday. Rain is forecasted for Tuesday and Wednesday as a cold front approaches, which is needed to alleviate the drought affecting parts of the region. Tropical activity is also being monitored.

‘Prancer Path’ gearing up for the holidays in Laurel
SUMMARY: The United Way of the Pine Belt Region is gearing up for its largest fundraiser of the year, known as Prancer Path, which will feature over 100 live cypress Christmas trees along Library Street and North Magnolia Street.
