Bill to build gas power plant amid energy supply concerns approved by SC Senate
SUMMARY: The South Carolina Senate has approved a bill to build a gas power plant to address energy supply shortages. The state’s population has grown rapidly, with a 90,600 increase in 2023, making it the fastest-growing state. Georgetown County Senator Steven Goldfinch emphasized the need for more energy to support growth, as projects in areas like Ory County are delayed due to energy shortages. After intense debates, the bill passed 38-3. Goldfinch hopes new plants will alleviate energy shortages and eliminate peak hour rates. He anticipates another power plant within the next three to five years.

The bill allows Santee Cooper and Dominion Energy to enter into an agreement together to build a gas power plant.
It’s important because state officials say we need more energy as the area grows, the bill aims to produce more power supply as demand in the state skyrockets.
