Rankins: Latest bond rating highlights IHL’s stewardship of Mississippi’s public universities
SUMMARY: The Board of Trustees of Mississippi’s Institutions of Higher Learning (IHL), overseeing eight public universities and various other centers, has been praised by Moody’s Investors Service for its fiscal prudence. In a January 11 report, Moody’s rated IHL as Aa2 stable, citing its operational scale, solid fundraising, and financial oversight. Though the system faces challenges such as pension liabilities and enrollment concerns, stable growth is expected post-pandemic. IHL’s cost-saving measures include reducing debt payments by $119 million since 2016, cutting $109 million in energy costs, saving over $105 million in centralized insurance, and negotiating better library subscription terms to save $4 million. These efforts underscore IHL’s dedication to its stewardship role.

Trump agrees to pause tariffs on Mexico, but import taxes still in place for Canada and China
SUMMARY: U.S. President Donald Trump and Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum temporarily suspended planned tariffs to facilitate further negotiations, with Mexico deploying 10,000 National Guard members to combat drug trafficking. Although tariffs on Canada and China were set to proceed, discussions aimed to address illegal immigration and fentanyl smuggling. Trump emphasized that tariffs would be lifted if both countries took more action. The situation raises concerns about potential economic impacts, with experts warning that tariffs could increase prices and slow growth. Despite the tensions, the White House downplayed the situation as a trade war, framing it instead as a “drug war.”
