Rankin County teen accused of killing mother appears in court
SUMMARY: A Rankin County teenager, Carly Gregg, faces charges of first-degree murder, attempted murder, and tampering with evidence after allegedly killing her mother, 40-year-old Ashley Smylie, and injuring her stepfather in a shooting on March 19. The stepfather reported finding Smylie dead and was shot in the shoulder by Gregg. Law enforcement apprehended her shortly after the incident. During her initial court appearance, Gregg pleaded not guilty, with a bond set at $1 million. A court appearance is scheduled for August 27, and her trial is expected to begin in September 2024.
