Rankin County tax assessor accused of rape found not guilty
SUMMARY: Rankin County Tax Assessor John Sullivan has been found not guilty on charges of sexual battery and assault. Sullivan was accused of raping a 19-year-old woman he met at a bar in 2022. The woman testified that she had declined a drink from Sullivan and later gave him and other friends a ride home. She claimed to have blacked out after one drink and only regained consciousness when her friends found her engaging in sexual activities with Sullivan. Sullivan maintained that the encounter was consensual and claimed that the woman acted hysterically when discovered. A rape test produced no evidence consistent with Sullivan’s DNA.
