Rankin County sheriff updates policies after officers tortured 2 Black men
SUMMARY: In response to six Rankin County officers—part of a “Goon Squad”—pleading guilty to brutalizing two Black men, Sheriff Bryan Bailey announced operational reforms. The officers involved had excessively abused Michael Corey Jenkins and Eddie Terrell Parker during a no-knock warrant execution. Jenkins suffered a gunshot injury from a gun forced into his mouth. To deter future misconduct, the department has overhauled its policies, updated complaint procedures, hired an external internal affairs investigator, expanded its compliance division, and conducted FBI-led civil rights training. The implicated officers await sentencing for federal charges.
