Push for graduate student union becomes a privacy issue | Tennessee
SUMMARY: Vanderbilt University is facing a dispute with graduate students seeking to unionize under the United Auto Workers, which filed a petition with the National Labor Relations Board. Vanderbilt argues that graduate students are not employees under the National Labor Relations Act, claiming unionization would disrupt student-faculty relationships. The case raises privacy concerns, as the NLRB issued subpoenas for student information, conflicting with the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) that protects student data. More than 80 students objected to releasing their information, prompting legal representation from the National Right to Work Legal Defense Foundation. Graduate students seek improved wages and benefits.

Mississippi mental health patients have been jailed without charges, new law aims to change that
SUMMARY: In Mississippi, many individuals with mental health issues are imprisoned instead of receiving appropriate care, leading to tragic outcomes, including deaths. A new law aims to address this by requiring mental evaluations before civil commitment and allowing jail only for those deemed actively violent, limiting detention to a maximum of 24 hours. This legislation has already led to a significant decrease in mental health admissions from jails to state hospitalsโ58% fewer in one year. Improved access to mental health services is a key focus, as officials emphasize that seeking help is a sign of strength, not weakness.
Hundreds of mental health patients in Mississippi have been jailed without ever being charged of a crime.
It’s a reality for hundreds of people needing mental health care in Mississippi every year. When there’s not enough resources to help them, Mississippi’s alternative has been to put them in jail. In a handful of cases, people have died behind bars waiting for help, and doctors say that going to jail could increase the risk of suicide for someone who is already experiencing a mental health crisis. Fearing ‘weaponization’ against puberty blockers, California doc sits on study | California
SUMMARY: A significant study from Children‘s Hospital Los Angeles, which is a leading center for child medical gender interventions, remains unpublished due to concerns of its findings being misused against puberty blockers for children. The nearly $10 million research found no mental health improvement in children receiving these treatments, contradicting a previous Dutch study. Dr. Johanna Olson-Kennedy expressed fear that results could fuel arguments for banning these treatments. The report highlights troubling statistics on depression and suicide among the participants. As state bans on transgender treatments for minors increase, the U.S. Supreme Court is set to hear arguments on Tennessee’s ban soon.
