Proposed ordinance would let Springfield Police Department tow cars with expired tags
SUMMARY: Springfield leaders are proposing an ordinance allowing police to tow vehicles with missing, invalid, or expired registration plates. Mayor Ken McClure emphasized the importance of citizens maintaining proper registration to support local institutions reliant on personal property tax revenue, which is notably impacted by the 47% of improperly registered vehicles in Greene County. Critics are concerned that this ordinance could disproportionately affect individuals facing financial difficulties, with costs for towing and registration adding burdens. Councilman Matt Simpson assured that towing would be at officers’ discretion, and an initial educational period will precede enforcement. Some residents support the proposal, while others find it excessive.

Daycares still waiting on subsidy payments from the state
SUMMARY: The Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) is facing delays in payments to daycares and foster parents, impacting providers like Elizabeth Hostetter, owner of The Wild Ones daycare. She hasn’t received payments since October, risking her ability to stay open as her operational costs are around $4,000 a month. Parents, like Kaitlin Shepard, emphasize the critical need for reliable daycare to maintain their jobs and contribute to the economy. While DESE claims to have resolved technical issues causing the backlog and is processing payments daily, significant delays remain, with 70% of backlog requests addressed thus far.
