SUMMARY: Over the next three weeks, ABC Action News is dedicated to amplifying local voices as the election approaches. Anchor Heather Lee reports live from Papa New York diner in Clearwater, a popular spot for community discussions. Key voter concerns include the ongoing insurance crisis in Florida, which complicates coverage for homeowners facing natural disasters. Many residents struggle with insurance payouts and are underinsured due to rising costs and depreciation policies. As voters prepare to cast their ballots this November, these issues, along with hurricane preparedness and rising waters, are top of mind in the local community.

Lives are changed yearly in Florida as hurricanes and rising water continues to threaten local communities. St. Petersburg is unfortunately used to bad weather and storm damage, so the city is investing millions of dollars to mitigate those issues. Meantime, the only way homeowners can protect their assets is to have solid insurance policies. But that’s tough to do as the state deals with an insurance crisis.

Randy Fine won Tuesday’s special election for a vacant congressional seat that the president carried by 30 points less than five months ago. The seat opened up after Mike Waltz was tapped to be Trump’s national security adviser in what was widely seen then as a move without much political risk. Fine defeated Democrat challenger Josh Weil. Florida CFO Jimmy Patronis defeated his challenger, Gay Valimont, to fill former Rep. Matt Gaetz’s seat.

Counting the potential toll of Trump’s tariffs on major Asian economies

Published

on

www.news4jax.com – Elaine Kurtenbach, Associated Press – 2025-04-02 05:09:00

SUMMARY: U.S. President Donald Trump’s escalated trade war poses challenges for Asian economies reliant on exports. His tariffs, aimed at reshoring U.S. manufacturing, impact trade agreements and increase uncertainty. China, Japan, Taiwan, South Korea, Vietnam, and India all face consequences. China’s EV exports and U.S. LNG imports are hit, Japan’s auto sector is threatened, and Taiwan, Korea, and Vietnam may invest more in U.S. factories. India, with strong pharmaceutical exports, is also vulnerable. Though some companies are shifting production out of China, the unpredictability of U.S. policy keeps many cautious. Tariff hikes continue reshaping global trade and economic strategies across Asia.

SUMMARY: U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio heads to Brussels to meet NATO leaders amid widespread concern over the Trump administration’s pro-Russia stance and growing tensions with allies. European officials are alarmed by Trump’s verbal attacks on NATO members, doubts about mutual defense commitments, and shifting U.S. priorities away from Europe. Rubio faces pressure to reassure allies as they brace for potential U.S. military drawdowns and seek clarity on American intentions. NATO remains wary of Trump’s overtures to Putin, even as it considers raising defense spending targets. Rubio’s task is complicated by conflicting U.S. rhetoric and allies’ fear of strategic instability.
