Preseason All-SWAC teams feature 8 players from Mississippi universities
SUMMARY: The Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) has announced its preseason list of impactful players, featuring eight athletes from Mississippi’s HBCUs. Alcorn State’s Malachi Bailey, given First-Team All-SWAC honors, stands out. Other First-Team selections include OL Evan Henry and WR Fabian McCray from Jackson State, and TE Tavarious Griffin also from Alcorn State. Second-Team selections include TE Jaxson Davis (Mississippi Valley State), DL Jeremiah Williams, and DBs Esaias Guthrie and Edwin Summerour (Jackson State and Alcorn State). Alcorn State is projected to lead the SWAC West, with Jackson State third and Mississippi Valley State last in the SWAC East. The season starts on August 29.

Woman accused of killing Mississippi teacher in wrong-way crash enters guilty plea
SUMMARY:
Jordan Leah Sullivan, 32, of Louisville, changed her plea to guilty after initially pleading not guilty to charges of aggravated DUI in the fatal crash that killed Canton teacher Tyra Small-Jackson on June 22, 2024. Sullivan, allegedly drunk, crashed into Small-Jackson’s car on Interstate 55, resulting in her death. Sullivan had a blood alcohol level above the legal limit. Small-Jackson, a 23-year veteran educator, had been named Teacher of the Year. Sullivan, with a criminal history, faces a recommended 20-year sentence, following her guilty plea before her February trial.

No. 17 Mississippi State dominates SEC opener with 35-point win over South Carolina
SUMMARY: No. 17 Mississippi State started Southeastern Conference play with a dominant 85-50 victory over South Carolina at Humphrey Coliseum. The Bulldogs quickly established control, leading by double digits within seven minutes and holding a 43-18 halftime advantage—their largest SEC halftime lead in over 20 years. Mississippi State showcased strong teamwork, shooting 56.5% while limiting South Carolina to 29.1%. Josh Hubbard led with 21 points, supported by Claudell Harris Jr. (17 points, 9 rebounds) and KeShawn Murphy (12 points, 8 rebounds). The Bulldogs improve to 13-1 and will face Vanderbilt next in Nashville on Tuesday.
