SUMMARY: Temperatures in Alabama are expected to warm up, but the focus is on Potential Tropical Cyclone 15, located east of the Yucatan Peninsula. This system could develop into Tropical Storm Nadine within 24 hours. However, it will not impact the United States, as it is projected to track westward and make landfall near Belize as a tropical storm. Once it moves inland through Central America, it is expected to weaken rapidly. Tropical storm watches are already in effect for parts of the Yucatan Peninsula as the situation develops.

Fifteen Auburn University community members had their visas revoked this week, according to university officials.

Jennifer Wood Adams, executive director of public affairs at Auburn, said in a statement that the visas were revoked by the Department of Homeland Security’s Bureau of Immigration and Customs Enforcement and Student and Exchange Visitor Program, not the university.

She said the university immediately reached out to those with cancelled visas. The university did not identify the students.

“Auburn’s Office of International Programs immediately contacted each affected individual to provide assistance and support. Our international students and personnel are valued members of our campus community, and we recognize the significant impact that visa or status revocation will have on them,” the statement said.

The statement also said the university will comply with all laws and cooperate with authorities.

“This is a fluid situation, and the university will monitor it closely and assess its implications,” she said.

According to the Associated Press, at least 1,024 students at 160 colleges, universities and university systems have had their visas revoked or their legal status terminated since late March.

Alireza Doroudi, a University of Alabama graduate student from Iran, was detained in March by ICE. According to the Crimson White, UA’s student news outlet, Doroudi was denied bond on Thursday and now faces deportation.

Alabama House committee approves Senate version of cell phone ban

The Alabama House Education Policy Committee Wednesday unanimously approved a bill that would ban cellphones in public schools during class instruction time.

SB 92, sponsored by Sen. Donnie Chesteen, R-Geneva, is identical to HB 166, sponsored by Rep. Leigh Hulsey, R-Helena, which passed the House earlier this month.

“It is identical to the way that we passed it out of the House and amended it on the floor recently. So we’re making sure that they’re tracking identically, and we have been able to successfully do that,” Hulsey, who carried the bill for Chesteen, said Wednesday.

The bill requires local school boards to adopt a policy to store student cell phones during class hours. Some schools use Yondr Pouches to store phones, but the legislation does not specify how a phone should be stored.

“They just have to turn the phone off, store it off your person in a locker, car, whatever your storage solution is, it’s a similar solution. Whatever they choose,” Hulsey said.

There are three exceptions for when a student can access their phones: if they study under an Individualized Education Plan that allows it; for teacher-approved instruction and for medical purposes.

The bill was approved with no discussion. It moves to the full House for consideration.
