Jackson Democratic mayoral primary runoff
SUMMARY: In less than two weeks, Jackson will hold a Democratic mayoral primary runoff, with Senator John Horn leading the initial election with over 12,000 votes, while incumbent Mayor Chokwe A. Lumumba garnered over 4,000 votes. Election Commissioner Sandra McCall urges higher voter turnout, as only 23% of registered voters participated in the primary. Many voters express surprise at Horn’s strong performance and attribute Lumumba’s decline in support to recent legal issues. Concerns over polling accessibility persist, with some voters advocating for app-based voting. Historically, runoff elections experience lower turnout, prompting McCall’s hopes for absentee voting to begin soon.
