JXN Water repairing fewer than 100 breaks after big freeze
SUMMARY: Scott Simmons reports that Jackson’s water system has experienced 97 leaks since last week, but no widespread boil water notices are in place. Jackson Water, which took over the system two years ago, claims progress is being made despite ongoing issues. For example, String’s Barbecue has faced significant losses due to a boil water notice following an 8-inch main break. Jackson Water has focused on upgrading treatment plants, resulting in improved water pressure. With $450 million in federal funds still available, the city is addressing over 100 miles of aging pipes, which will take about ten years to fully repair.

First Responders: Watch for signs of child bullying
SUMMARY: In this segment, Sergeant Christopher Ray, a school resource officer with the Tupelo Police Department, discusses how to recognize and address bullying. Bullying can be physical, verbal, social, or even cyberbullying, which affects children both in school and online. Parents should watch for signs like unexplained injuries, changes in behavior, or avoidance of school. Bullying can lead to long-term mental health issues such as anxiety, depression, or PTSD. Ray encourages children to speak up, avoid retaliation, and seek support from trusted adults and friends. Tupelo schools offer an anonymous reporting system to address bullying.
Anchor Tanya Carter spoke with Tupelo Police Sgt. Christopher Wray about signs parents can observe to determine if someone is bullying their child.

Senate under pressure to pass tax cut
SUMMARY: The Mississippi House has passed a significant tax cut package, including a proposal to eliminate the state income tax over 10 years, reduce grocery taxes, and direct funds to the Department of Transportation and state retirement. Rep. Trey Lamar, the bill’s sponsor, defends it, arguing that taxing work is harmful. Critics, including some Democrats, worry about the impact on municipalities and potential higher taxes elsewhere. Governor Reeves has criticized the Senate for not offering its own plan, while Lt. Governor Hosemann has promised a conservative tax proposal, though no timeline has been provided for its release.
