Know Before You Go || TDOT speaks on travel impacts this spring after Hurricane Helene
SUMMARY: Spring break travel in Tennessee may face challenges due to ongoing construction, particularly on I-40 where sections were damaged during a recent storm. Drivers should expect slow speeds and possible backups in certain areas, especially where one-lane traffic is in place. Alternative routes, such as I-81 and I-77, are recommended for smoother travel. Construction continues on various roads, including busy routes around Knoxville and near the airport, so travelers should plan extra time. Pothole repairs are progressing, with more permanent patches expected. The SmartWay system offers real-time traffic updates, though drivers should avoid using it while driving.

We spoke with Mark Nagi about what travelers should expect on the roads during spring break, the latest on I-40 and potholes.

TN bill allowing districts to ban undocumented students moves forward
SUMMARY: Tennessee lawmakers are debating a bill that would allow local school districts to refuse enrollment of undocumented students. Proponents argue that the decision should rest with local education agencies, emphasizing the enforcement of proof of citizenship alongside residency and immunization requirements. However, Democrats oppose the bill, asserting that it undermines education rights for all children, regardless of immigration status. Protesters, including students and educators, have voiced concerns, deeming the legislation an attack on values and children’s freedom to learn. The bill, known as HB 793, recently passed a committee vote of 5-3 and will advance to the full education committee.

Tennessee lawmakers continue to discuss whether or not public school districts should be allowed to deny children who are undocumented.

As U.S. sees measles outbreaks, Tennessee’s vaccination rate has been on the decline
SUMMARY: Tennessee has not reported any measles cases in 2025, but vaccination rates have been decreasing for years. Measles, a highly contagious viral disease, can cause serious complications, including pneumonia and brain inflammation. Tennessee’s MMR vaccination rate for children has dropped, with Williamson County seeing a decrease from 44.3% in 2019 to 33.6% in 2024. Experts attribute this decline to vaccine hesitancy, despite reassurance that the MMR vaccine is safe. Doctors emphasize the importance of vaccination for protecting vulnerable populations, including immunocompromised children, and encourage parents to consult with healthcare providers about vaccination concerns.
