SUMMARY: The Southern Miss Golden Eagles, renowned as the best fielding team in the SEC, are riding a hot winning streak into their Friday game at 6 PM against the Indiana Hoosiers at UVA. Beyond their skills, they’re sporting playoff goatees—a tradition started in 2022 by former player Reece Ewing. This facial hair trend has continued, with some players having fuller goatees than others. Their opponent, Indiana, ranked third in the Big Ten and reached the conference semifinals, but they haven’t faced Slade Wilks and his determined, goatee-growing teammates, who are embracing the intimidating look for their playoff push.

The Southern Miss Golden Eagle establish a new playoff tradition a couple of years ago and the goatees are back. Former Golden Eagle Reece Ewing is credited with the team sporting goatees during the postseason. This year USM has a lot of newcomers but the veterans like Slade Wilks are keeping the rare tradition alive which has created bonds with the young players and their upperclassmen.
