Plan for returning Amtrak service to Gulf Coast could be derailed by Alabama city leaders
SUMMARY: Amid plans to reestablish Amtrak train service to Alabama, Mississippi, and Louisiana for the first time since Hurricane Katrina in 2005, Mobile, Alabama, faces significant challenges. The proposed route includes stops in Mississippi and aims to connect Mobile to New Orleans. However, much of the project‘s funding relies on subsidies from the governments of these states, with a significant portion expected from Mobile. City council members are uncertain, with Councilman Josh Woods, Ben Reynolds, and Joel Daves expressing reservations. For the plan to proceed, approval from five of the seven city council members is required, casting doubt on the project’s future.
