SUMMARY: Peter Matthew Skarmeta, known as Captain Pete, a pioneer of the Gulf Coast maritime and tourism industry, has died at 94. After taking over his family’s Island Ferry business in 1963, Captain Pete revitalized it by offering excursions to Ship Island. Despite Hurricane Camille’s devastating impact in 1969, he mortgaged everything to save the business. Skarmeta also served as a marine during the Korean War and later partnered with the American Legion to expand his family’s ferry business back to Gulfport. Pan Isles Incorporated, dating back to the 1920s, remains well-known in South Mississippi.
