Pensacola Fire Department volunteers return from Hurricane Helene relief efforts in Gilchrist County
SUMMARY: Responders in Pensacola are actively assisting those affected by recent power restorations, which have led to numerous home fires. Pensacola Fire Deputy Chief Justin Horde reported that their crew joined a structure fire task force to mitigate this risk. Although there were widespread power outages and potential fire hazards, no fires required extinguishing this year. Four volunteers from the Pensacola Fire Department spent nearly a week in Gilcrest County, preparing for emergencies before returning home Wednesday evening. They remain ready to address any fire incidents that may arise as power is restored.
Hurricane Helene made landfall one week ago today, and four firefighters on Pensacola Fire Deputy Chief Justin Hoard’s team saw the damage from the storm firsthand as they responded to help out with the damage in Gilchrist County.

A close look at birds passing through the Gulf Coast (photos)
SUMMARY: As cooler days approach, thousands of birds are migrating south, with many passing through Fort Morgan along the Gulf Coast. WKRG News 5’s Taylor Boyon highlights how the Banding Coalition of the Americas tracks these birds, providing vital data on species populations and conservation needs. Wildlife experts safely capture birds to measure and band them with tiny ID bracelets before releasing them back into the wild. In less than a week, 46 species and nearly 500 individual birds have been banded. The research continues through Saturday, allowing more opportunities to observe these stunning creatures up close.
Every fall, thousands of birds fly through the Gulf Coast to migrate south, and many pass through Fort Morgan.

Abortion Exception Bill Reintroduced in Alabama | Oct. 3, 2024 | News 19 at 4:30 p.m.
SUMMARY: A proposed bill introduced in Alabama’s legislature seeks to amend the state‘s abortion laws significantly. If passed, it would allow abortions in cases of rape, incest, and when a mother’s health is at risk, expanding existing restrictions. Additionally, the legislation aims to impose strict penalties on men responsible for pregnancies resulting from these crimes, including requiring them to cover medical costs and potentially facing castration if found guilty. Currently, Alabama has stringent abortion laws following a 2022 Supreme Court decision, allowing abortions only when the mother’s life is in serious danger. This bill, labeled HB 50, is set for consideration in the upcoming session.
A pre-filed bill introduced in the state’s legislature is proposing significant changes to Alabama’s abortion laws.

Decatur Fire & Rescue Responds After Video Surfaces | Oct. 3, 2024 | News 19 at 4 p.m.
SUMMARY: Recruits at the Alabama Fire College were sent home after a controversial video linked to their training surfaced, prompting an investigation. The video, recorded earlier this year, shows recruits and supervisors engaged in an unusual rescue scenario in a bathroom where a man lies on the floor with his pants down, accompanied by laughter. Decatur Fire Chief Tracy Thornton stated that the exercise seen in the video was inappropriate for training purposes. While it’s unclear if the video and the investigation are connected, the department acknowledges mistakes were made and that appropriate actions are being taken.
