Peacemaker Festival underway in Fort Smith
SUMMARY: The Peacemaker Festival in downtown Fort Smith is anticipated to exceed $1 million in charitable contributions this year. Attendees began lining up hours early, including Travis Trumper and friends from Iowa, eager to see performer Casper McWade. Justine Jackson, another first-time attendee, noted that this year’s festival is held outside the sweltering summer heat, making it more enjoyable. Festival-goers are excited to experience rising country and red dirt artists like the Joe Stamm Band, 49 Winchester, and headliner Morgan Wade. Local police will ensure safety and manage traffic during the event, with tickets still available online or onsite.
The event was moved from the heat of the summer to the slightly-less hot autumn.

Gunman in deadly Mad Butcher shooting appears in court
SUMMARY: Travis Posy, accused of killing four people and injuring others at a Ford ice grocery store, is nearing trial, scheduled for February 3. U.S. presidential campaigns shift focus to race and immigration
SUMMARY: Former President Donald Trump is campaigning in Aurora, Colorado, emphasizing migrant crime and announcing a crackdown on Venezuelan gangs if elected. He claims the city is plagued by criminal activity tied to the brutal Tren de Aragua gang, despite the Republican mayor, Mike Kaufman, stating that such crime is limited. Meanwhile, Vice President Kamala Harris is in Phoenix, Arizona, working to strengthen her appeal with Hispanic voters. She has a higher favorability rating among them than Trump, though she struggles with Hispanic men, a demographic leaning towards Trump. Harris’s campaign has launched a voter outreach group targeting Latino men.
Race and immigration were the focus of the two major campaigns on Friday as the race for the White House continues.

Social media safety for kids
SUMMARY: The Children‘s Safety Center of Washington County is advising parents on children’s safety regarding social media amid rising concerns. Operations Director Casey Atwoods highlights that 80% of sexual abuse occurs in isolated, one-on-one situations, often through messages on social media. A 2022 Pew Research Center study indicates explicit content is a primary concern for parents of teens. Atwoods stresses the importance of monitoring social media usage, addressing red flags, and having open conversations with children to build trust. She encourages parents to reinforce unconditional support and suggests setting kids’ social media accounts to private as an additional safeguard.
