Work on Laurel water tower to continue another four weeks or so
SUMMARY: The City of Laurel is upgrading the RH Watkins water tower near Laurel High School, which holds approximately 500,000 gallons and serves over 600 homes and 45 businesses. Repairs are necessary every 20 to 25 years due to rust and flaking on the tank’s interior. The project, costing $336,000 and funded by Public Utilities, involves cleaning, sandblasting, and repainting both the inside and outside. While the upgrade has temporarily caused low water pressure, it has been restored using other well pumps. The repair process is expected to take at least four more weeks, with barricades in place at 12th Street and Old Bas Springs Road.

911 outages cause counties to pull out backup plans
SUMMARY: A 911 outage affected several Mississippi counties, including Jones County, due to a cut fiber line. Early Wednesday, emergency services had to revert to backup plans, directing callers to administrative lines. Jones County officials communicated the situation through social media to inform the public, which may have limited call volume. Neighboring counties also faced outages, but Smith County remained operational and assisted by handling calls for affected areas. By 9 a.m., 911 services resumed across the impacted regions, alleviating pressure on first responders. Emergency management agencies emphasized their commitment to maintaining community safety despite the disruption.
