Flying this summer? You’ll need a REAL ID starting in May
SUMMARY: Starting May 7, 2025, travelers will need a Real ID or passport to fly domestically. This mandate, aligned with post-9/11 security reforms, aims to enhance safety by standardizing identification. Kim Jackson, TSA’s Federal Security Director in Mississippi, emphasizes the importance of this requirement due to previous misuse of various IDs by hijackers. Currently, 97% of Mississippians are Real ID compliant. To obtain a Real ID, individuals must provide a social security card, birth certificate copy, and two proofs of residency at their local DMV. Early compliance is encouraged to avoid last-minute complications.
The mandate comes 20 years after the REAL ID Act was passed in 2005 in response to the 9/11 Commission’s recommendation.
