Partnership among Lowndes County Schools, Columbus Air Force Base, and Department of Rehabilitation Services teaches work skills – Home – WCBI TV
SUMMARY: A partnership among the Lowndes County School District, Columbus Air Force Base, and the Mississippi Department of Rehabilitation Services is benefiting special needs students through Project SEARCH. The program allows students to spend their final school year working various jobs at Columbus Air Force Base to learn job skills and handle work responsibilities. Project SEARCH aims to build confidence in students, enabling them to become contributing members of society. Currently operating in Ohio and 48 other states, the program seeks to expand within Mississippi, growing from 22 to 28 sites next year. This year, 6 students graduated from the program.

Dau Mabil’s family at odds over independent autopsy arrangements
SUMMARY: In Jackson, Mississippi, the family of Dau Mabil and their attorneys are unable to agree on a suitable doctor for an independent autopsy. Mabil's initial autopsy by the Mississippi State Medical Examiner's Office identified his death as a drowning, but the manner of death remains undetermined. No signs of trauma were found, although ethanol was detected in his liver tissue. The disagreement involves attorney Lisa Ross and Mabil's brother, Bul Mabil, over the choice of pathologist Dr. Amy Gruszecki. Dau Mabil was found dead in the Pearl River in April 2024 after going missing in March.

Columbus prepares to spend money on paving streets
SUMMARY: Columbus, Mississippi, plans to pave more streets after receiving a bid nearly $1 million below the estimated $6 million budget. Lower asphalt prices contributed to the cost savings. 2nd suspect arrested in shooting death of Alabama man at Mississippi bar
SUMMARY: Waynesboro police arrested Richard Mayfield, 24, on July 2, charging him as an accessory after the fact in the shooting death of 24-year-old Alabama man Brandon Michael Cartwright. The incident occurred outside the High Noon Lounge on June 29. Richard Mayfield, with a $500,000 bond, is the cousin of the first suspect, Jaylen Mayfield, who faces first-degree murder charges and a $1 million bond. Cartwright's family attended the court hearings, expressing deep emotional distress. Waynesboro police indicated no further arrests are expected and urge anyone with information to contact them.
