Participants needed for misophonia study at Southern Miss
SUMMARY: Dr. Mark Huff from the University of Southern Mississippi (USM) is leading a new study on misophonia, an auditory condition where individuals are highly sensitive to specific sounds such as chewing, slurping, or coughing. Initial data shows about 40% of people have some sensitivity, with 15% severely affected. The study aims to gauge the prevalence of misophonia, examine possible auditory and psychological comorbidities, and assess the impact of these sounds on focus and learning. Participants can join via a flyer QR code or by emailing Dr. Huff, and will receive an auditory screening and $75 Amazon gift cards for their participation.

Bone-chilling cold temperatures lead shelters to open
SUMMARY: The Stewpot Opportunity Center in Jackson is responding to dangerously cold temperatures by extending its hours to 22 per day and providing shelter for up to 30 people. The center ensures guests receive food, clothing, hygiene items, hot meals, showers, and rest, with activities like movies to help them stay comfortable. Director Javonda Stanton emphasizes that it is inhumane for people to be left outside in the cold, which can lead to conditions like hypothermia and frostbite. The city is also reopening a temporary shelter at Champion Gym in partnership with Shower Power for those in need.
