Paralyzed Florida woman says Medicaid denied essential medical gear
SUMMARY: A paralyzed woman in Florida, Karen Evanoiski, is fighting against Medicaid’s denial of crucial medical equipment, including a shower chair and a ceiling lift. Despite appealing the decisions, Sunshine Health claims they are not medically necessary, leaving her frustrated and unable to live independently. Evanoiski, who became a quadriplegic from a car accident, has been on Medicaid for almost 30 years. She stresses the importance of receiving essential care, stating, “I’m a human… I deserve to be cared for.” Advocates highlight systemic issues, noting that Medicaid managed care plans may prioritize profit over patient needs.

Who pays attorney fees in a property insurance lawsuit? Florida bill shifts the burden again
SUMMARY: In Florida, a House panel has advanced a bill (HB 1551) to revise a 2022 law limiting homeowner attorney fees against insurers, sparking debate on legal rights in claim disputes. Supporters argue the existing law favors insurers too heavily, making it difficult for homeowners to contest wrongful claim denials. Rep. Michele Rayner emphasized the need to prioritize consumer protection. However, opponents, including various industry representatives, claim the law has stabilized the market and low rate increases. The proposed bill would implement a “loser pays” system, shifting attorney costs to the losing party, and is facing varying levels of support among lawmakers.
