SUMMARY: The Mississippi oyster industry is experiencing a long-awaited revival as it prepares for the upcoming Open Season, starting Wednesday. After years of setbacks from the Bonnet Carre Spillway flooding, fishermen are returning to the water, with many like Patrick Parkinson reporting an abundance of quality oysters. The spillway’s closures have helped the ecosystem recover, allowing the restoration of oyster reefs. The Department of Marine Resources is collaborating with private companies to expedite this process. However, uncertainty looms with potential future spillway openings that could threaten the industry’s progress. The management of the spillway will significantly impact the industry’s future.

2024 marked the return of oyster season on the Mississippi Gulf Coast for the first time in six years.
